Legslative Updates

SNAPa Members Recognized As Experts in School Nutrition 

Three SNAPa members have recently been invited to give testimony to legislators about proposed food service bills. Lee Ann Hocker from Susquehanna Township School District and Barbara Nissel from Great Valley School District appeared before House Education Committee on May 2 to testify on HB 908, which supports the Governors Initiative for a breakfast mandate and increased funding levels tied to the PDE nutrition standards.               I.      Meals at reasonable charge to students

SNAPa will advocate that all children receive nutritionally adequate meals at a reasonable charge to the child at the point of service provided through Child Nutrition Programs and funded through a combination of resources, which will include contributions from federal, state, local, and family. 

           II.      Access

SNAPa will initiate and support collaborative efforts and legislation to eliminate barriers to participation in Child Nutrition Programs. 

         III.      Funding SNAPa will initiate and support legislation and collaborative efforts among federal, state and local entities to ensure that funding is available for quality child nutrition programs to support health development and education of children. 

        IV.      Agriculture SNAPa will support America's agriculture community in its efforts to supply Child Nutrition Programs with a safe and nutritious food supply that is provided to schools through flexible and efficient procurement and delivery systems. 

           V.      Competition

SNAPa will advocate for change in state and federal regulations laws and policies that will safeguard the health of students and maintain financial stability in the school's Child Nutrition Programs by authorizing only the food service program to sell food during the regularly scheduled meal periods.

        VI.      Regulations

SNAPa will advocate regulations at the federal mid state levels that are written and revised periodically, or as needed, with stakeholder involvement, including SNAPa.

      VII.      Nutrition, Food and Education

SNAPa will initiate and support collaborative efforts including federal funding to Child Nutrition Programs to ensure a comprehensive coordinated nutrition education program in schools.

   VIII.      Nutrition Integrity

SNAPa will support collaborative efforts to continue to educate stakeholders of Child Nutrition Programs on the issues of nutrition integrity.
